The Village of Timberlake addresses Property Maintenance Standards for the exterior of residential dwelling units, grounds, and/or structures, with the goal of enforcing proper upkeep of residential properties.

INFORMATION, CODES, AND ORDINANCES referenced from The International Property Maintenance Code Book and The Village of Timberlake Codified Ordinances and pertains to the entire exterior of your property.

The Property Maintenance Department Explains:  The village understands the challenges residents feel. And yet, we all must adapt to modern times.

  • The village receives many complaints that residents “do not like looking at others refuse, or accumulations of piles of junk, empty flower pots, broken toys, tools, equipment, etc…”
  • Please take into consideration the peaceful well-being of your neighbors and our community at large.
  • Because of the unique footprint of many homes, its many odd shaped lots, along with the large size of the trash and recycle containers provided by Republic Services, villagers have become complacent about where they are storing their refuse containers.
  • Please screen any and all refuse containers and/or debris from view.
  • This can be accomplished several ways.
  • Put in your garage, screen containers with approved fencing or shrubbery.
  • Creating an additional eyesore with screening, or inadequate screening, is prohibited.

How to keep trash containers from becoming gross!

1) Make Less Trash By Recycling  Sounds obvious, right? If you had less trash, you wouldn’t have to worry about your trash cans so much. So how do you make less trash? Recycle! Break down cardboard boxes. Rinse out plastic containers. Drop off recyclables Republic doesn’t pick-up at different places in the community. You’ll be amazed at how much less trash you really have.

2) Reduce Food Waste  Rotten food in our trash accounts for most of the spills, sloshes, and messes that we have to clean out of our trash cans. Reduce the amount of food waste by utilizing a garbage disposal. For items that must be thrown in the trash but may present a problem for your trash can, you can double bag. Use plastic grocery bags to wrap up meat trimmings or other items that need to be trashed but could make a mess. Or try composting.

3) Prevent Odors  One of the worst things about trash cans can be the odor. There are quite a few things you can do to actually prevent trash can odors.

4) Baking Soda  Sprinkle it in the bottom of a trash can or directly into the trash to help absorb stinky odors. Use baking soda for scrubbing out your trash can to remove odors that may have seeped in.

5) Bleach  Sometimes you just need a tough disinfectant to get rid of germs and odors.

6) Cat Litter  Cat litter absorbs odors and liquids, leaving a fresh scent in the vicinity of the trash.

7) Dryer Sheets  Dryer sheets make another great anti-odor tool for your trash.

8 ) Pay Attention to Where Trash Is Stored  Hate storing trash cans in your garage? Store cans on a concrete slab behind your house. Outdoor trash cans can attract bugs and animals so that will have to be a consideration. It’s always a good idea to try to prevent insects from being attracted to your house.

9 ) Preventing Bugs and Pests in the Garbage  Clean out the recyclables. Be sure to rinse out plastic, glass, and metal containers that are being recycled. Clean garbage containers. Washing down the insides and outsides of your trash and recycling containers is a monthly job. Find it easy to do this chore with a garden hose and a long-handled scrub brush. Or how about an old toilet brush to clean the can…the trash can!

10 ) Put a Lid on It  On your trash. Lids on trash will keep bugs out, keep smells in, and keep infestations away. Put a heavy rock or a stack of bricks on top of the lid for extra security from critters.

11 ) Don’t Miss Trash Day  It’s the worst feeling in the world! Seeing the garbage truck drive away when you know you have multiple bags of trash in your cans that NEED to be on that truck. Keep yourself from having trash around longer than necessary. Set a reminder on your phone or computer to ALERT you before each trash day. Or use sticky notes on your car dashboard to remind you to take out the trash before you leave the driveway. And if you do miss a trash day, there’s always next week!

12 ) Clean Out the Can On Trash Day  Before you haul your trash cans back up to the house after trash day, take a moment to clean them out. All it really takes for most trash cans is a water hose. Rinsing out your cans and allowing them to dry will go a long way towards preventing issues from happening. If you have a bigger mess in your can, using a mild dish soap, or bleach if it’s really bad, can work wonders.
